Tuesday Sports Wrap: RiverHawks Cruise, Monticello Knocks Off Boys' Hockey

High school teams got back into action Tuesday night. It was a good night for the girls' teams, while the boys' teams are looking to get back on track.

Girls' basketball

The St. Michael-Albertville girls' basketball team used a big second half to beat Princeton 60-46, opening with a win in Mississippi 8 Conference play.

The Knights trailed by one going into the half, but used a 40-point second half to cruise to the win.

The Knights were lead by Rachel Valley's 19 points, along with 14 points from Christine Thorn and nine points from Carlyn Anderson.

The Knights continue conference play on Thursday night when they host the Roger Royals at 7:30 p.m. at high school gym.

Boys' basketball

The boys' basketball team came up just short against Hutchinson on Tuesday night, 66-64, as they fell to 1-3 on the year. Joe Carpenter turned in an all-around effort with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in the loss. Michael Wiese added 20 points for the Knights, and Jared Moran pulled down 10 rebounds. Adam Hjelter led Hutchinson with 27 points.

The boys host Spring Lake Park at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

Boys' hockey

The Knights boys' hockey team fell to 2-2-0 this season with a 4-1 loss at the hands of Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake on Tuesday night at the STMA arena.

The Knights managed 36 shots on goal, but just were only able to get a single goal from standout Jake Larsen, assisted by Miles Fricke and Jordan Norton. Andrew Semo saved 22 shots for the Knights. Four different players recorded the four goals for Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake.

The Knights will look to get back to their winning ways from the start of the season when they hit the road to take on Mound-Westonka on Thursday night. The game starts at 7pm.

Girls' hockey

In girls" hockey, the North Wright Country Riverhawks stayed hot heading into a big weekend, with a 4-0 win over Rogers. The 'Hawks dominated the game early, and stayed on the attack throughout, with 44 shots on goal to just 12 shots for Rogers.

The 'Hawks scored three goals in the first period, and the game was never in doubt.

Kasey Blomberg continues to lead the way on offense, recording two goals and one assist Tuesday night. Dani Sibley and Sam Pitts added the other goals for the 'Hawks, and Amanda Koep stopped all 12 shots she faced.

This weekend looms large for the North Wright County girls as a test of where they really stand in the state, as they will travel north to take on their reigning section champion Roseau on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., followed by a game at 6 p.m. Saturday night against defending Class A State Champions, Warroad.
