Local Girl Scout Troop Makes a Difference in St. Michael

Crow River Service Unit Girl Scout troop 13506 learned that simply by taking the time to write a letter they could make a big difference.

Earlier this year, the third grade girls in Brownies (Troop 13506) realized there was a problem at local St. Michael parks.

"We all decided together that there should be recycling at the parks instead of just a place for trash," Brownie Emily said.

So to make a change, the girls went about it the Girl Scout way.

"We all sat down and worked on writing a letter together to the parks department asking for more recycling," Rachel said.

The girls were thrilled when they received a response last month from City Clerk Diana Berning at .

"The city put recycling containers at the rec center and also the BMX park," Savanna said.

The group of 12 girls is one of many Girl Scout troops in the St. Michael-Albertville area but there group is a little unique in the fact that the girls are from five different schools combined.

"Most of the girls have been together since Daisies [kindergarten] and we've added a couple since then. It's been a great experience for all the girls," Leader Heidi Fuchs said.

"Every year the girls have done something for the environment and are committed to giving to the community and society," Leader Patty Johnson added as the girls took turns telling their story.

It was a positive learning experience to express a problem they saw and actually get results and the girls took a lot away from that. "We were really happy that they listened," Adalyn said.

Her friend Emily followed up by saying, "It makes me feel like little kids like us can make a big difference."

That they can.
