Special Olympics Minnesota Looking to Begin St. Michael-Albertvile Team

Paired with clubs in Elk River or Monticello for years, participation numbers are starting to warrant a program in our backyard.

Special Olympics Minnesota is looking to expand its presence within St. Michael-Albertville.

With substantial teams in Maple Grove, Elk River and Monticello reaching capacity, and more athletes and families looking for a place to participate, the organization is looking to start a new St. Michae-Albertville team, competing in various activities.

As good neighbors to this new team, we would appreciate any help or suggestions you might have as we get started, said Kelly Monciatti, sports organizer for Special Olympics Minnesota. She said the first priority is to identify key leadership volunteers and coaches who can help get this new team off the ground.

“Any suggestions or contacts people might be able to pass along will be greatly appreciated,” she stated in a release given to St. Michael Patch. Anyone with a link to the St. Michael-Albertville community that could be helpful.”

The new team would provide a place for athletes, families and coaches who are looking to join Special Olympics, and it will relieve some of the pressure from the Maple Grove, Elk River and Monticello teams. There may be a few current athletes, families and/or coaches who have a specific reason for wanting to join the new team, and they will be welcome to do so, but the organization will not be recruiting from within existing teams.

“We believe the St. Michael-Albertville team will provide many with a new local option to participate in Special Olympics sports, leadership and health programming for people with intellectual disabilities,” Monciatti said.
