St. Michael to Host Disabilities Dance for Wright County

The first formal dance for the developmentally delayed community within Wright County is happening right here in St. Michael-Albertville.

On Saturday, April 14, these young adults will have the opportunity to get all dolled up and attend a dance that some compare to prom. The event will be hosted at Middle School East.

"I can't wait to see the look on their faces when they get to be in the spotlight," one of the coordinators, Rachel Young of REM in Buffalo said. "And they love to move and groove! So, they're going to have so much fun."

The idea came together through many people and organizations, but is mainly sponsored by People First, a self-advocacy organization supporting the rights of adults and children with disabilities, neurological, brain and spinal cord injury services. They are committed to empowering people with disabilities to speak up for themselves and make their own decisions.

Last month, the girls were invited to go dress "shopping" at a dress fitting event held at the building thanks to the kindess of Lisa Gray at who donated formalwear for the girls.

"A lot of these people didn't get to go to their prom or maybe they have no reason to dress up anymore," Young said. "This is for them."

The formal dinner and dance kicks off with a 3:30 p.m. Grand March at St. Michael Middle School East followed by a catered dinner and dance with a DJ on site. Tickets are $15 a person and limited quantities are still available by calling Rachel at 612-978-3777. To date, more than 150 tickets have sold.
