Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.   1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” …

From Zero to What? St. Michael, Albertville Suddenly See Cash from Local Government Aid (LGA)

The Minnesota Legislature has set the dollar amounts cities can expect to get, and St. Michael and Albertville aren't coming up empty anymore.

Changes to the formula state government uses mean the cities of St. Michael and Albertville are in for some Local Government Aid funds in 2014. That's news because neither city is getting a cent of LGA money in 2013. The omnibus tax bill passed the Minnesota Senate 36-30 just a few minutes before midnight Monday—the legislative session's legal deadline. According to Session Daily, "the bill would make changes to the distribution of local government aid through a new formula. Counties and townships would also see an increase in state aid—all in an effort to lower property taxes, supporters say." Albertville is in line to get $79,647. For St. Michael, the figure is $239,129. Related at St. Michael Patch:

Shreya Dixit could have taken the bus to her parents' home in Eden Prairie that night. That was the plan when the University of Wisconsin student woke up that morning, before she learned she would be able to catch a ride with a friend who was driving to the Twin Cities that night. When she and two other friends were getting into the car for that trip, she could have gotten into the back seat instead of the front passenger seat. The driver could have, when she realized roughly a third of the way into their …

Oh, so close! I was going to make history and agree with you 100%, Mike B., as I see many more women on their phones distracted and not paying attention to the road than men. I would just change your last line to "women drivers, while distracted on their phones, [...] can be the biggest menace on the roads". The one that irritates me the most is a woman at a four way stop yapping on the phone and…   more ›

What Does the Minnesota Education Bill Mean for STMA Schools?

Early education was a huge focus in the $15.7 billion bill, which received slivers of support from Republicans in both chambers of the state capitol.

A $15.7 billion education package that will "make life easier" for working parents, according to the bill's supporters, now awaits Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton's signature as work begins to wrap up on the 2013 Legislative Session. The omnibus bill, which means one version of the bill was introduced in each chamber, was approved with small support from Republicans over the weekend, picking up five GOP votes in the state house and four more in the senate. Sen. Ann Rest of New Hope was the lone "no" vote from the DFL (Democrat) side of the aisle in the senate, creating the 41-26 margin.  In the House, the bill passed on a 78-56 vote. Rep. Connie Bernardy (DFL-Fridley) said the bill creates history with all-day kindergarten and a series of …
