Diapers to Diplomas: St. Michael-Albertville Grads Have Grown

Hey High School Senior parents! Honor (or, generally embarrass) your graduate by participating in our Diapers to Diplomas feature. We've had a couple volunteers help us get started.

There's no doubt senioritis is setting in for those 17 and 18-year-olds over at St. Michael-Albertville High School. After all, graduation is less than four weeks away.  Before they "leave the nest," we're going to take this opportunity to show the community how much your seniors have grown! We have a couple of "volunteers" to help us get started. Special thanks to the Christian and Green families.  Now, it's up to the OTHER senior families to keep this going.  All you have to do is click on the "UPLOAD PHOTO" button, and put up a photo of your graduate as a baby or toddler, and a copy of their senior photo, or a fun candid.  If you have any questions, you can e-mail mike.schoemer@patch.com.  Congrats graduates. And, um, sorry?

STMA’s Heieie Places at State Speech

Five-year competitor Isaac Heieie wrapped up a stellar speech career by becoming St. Michael-Albertville High's first medalist in more than a decade.

St. Michael-Albertville has a placewinner at the state speech tournament for the first time in over a decade. Isaac Heieie finished in eighth place in prose to finish his senior season. He is the first medalist from St. Michael-Albertville High in twelve years and only the third person to place at state in school history. Also competing at state from STMA were Mike Papas in creative expression, Jed Rothstein in extemporaneous speaking, and Michael Bruner and Katrina Budde in duo interpretation. “They all held their own,” said head coach Mike Frickstad. “This was a great finish to an amazing speech season.” Heieie and Papas were making their second appearances at state. “Everyone was so good,” said Heieie of his competition. “I had to sit …

St. Michael Elementary Kids Celebrate Kindness

Students at the district's central elementary school earned free frozen treats and a visit from the Knights' mascot for good deeds done throughout the year.

St. Michael Elementary School students were in a frenzy last week as the teachers and staff called everyone into the gym/cafeteria space for a speciall all-school assembly. Students from the school, which houses first grade through fourth, were set to receive a special treat for all the good deeds they had done throughout the school year. The staff at STME recognizes students for acts of kindness, honor and respect for fellow students and teachers shown throughout the year. This year, according to teacher K.C. Solum, the kids did enough to send the Knight Mascot more than 26,000 miles (a certain number of miles is awarded for each act). "That's more than enough to send our Knight around the globe," Solum said, as he was met by cheers loud …

Viking Legend Tommy Kramer Featured at St. Michael Football Camp

St. Michael-Albertville youth football players got some one-on-one instruction from former Viking quarterback Tommy Kramer Saturday. The thrill was as big for parents in attendance as it was for the aspiring players.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tommy Kramer, an all-pro during the mid-1980s and one of the franchise's leaders in passing yards and touchdowns, made his way to St. Michael-Albertville Saturday for some one-on-one instruction with aspiring football players here. Kramer, now 58, was the starting quarterback for the NFC in the 1986 Pro Bowl, and still holds the record for most passing touchdowns against the Green Bay Packers in a single game with six. But Saturday was about reaching out to kids, Kramer said, and teaching them the basics of throwing the ball. He spent the moring with youth football players at the fields near St. Michael-Albertville Middle School East. A crowd of parents, many in purple in gold, looked on. "This is always a …

St. Michael-Albertville Student Aims for Spot During MTV Music Awards

High school student Eli Guillou, whose video talents are no stranger to Patch readers, is hoping to win a 30-second spot during the MTV Music Video Awards. You can help him along the way by voting.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is teaming up with local high school students to create a new public safety message about seatbelt use, from the vantage point of one of the biggest at-risk populations in the state–teen drivers. Statistics show teens are more likely to suffer injury in an auto crash than come down with most common diseases, yet thousands of teens across Minnesota get behind the wheel each day without buckling up. That's where the video campaign comes in. Students were challenged to create a 30-second saftey message, and St. Michael-Albertville High School student Eli Guillou was up to the task. Guillou is now one of three state finalists. The winner will get a scholarship and the spot during one of the most-…

I'm wondering if we need to rethink our belief that the Minnesota Constitution really is harder to change than state laws. We're seeing constitutional amendments precisely because the proposals couldn't make it through the law-making process. In other words, amendment supporters see it as an easier process than one that forces them to go through the governor. So I think it's more accurate to say …   more ›

OPINION: Honoring St. Michael, Albertville Teachers

Friday marks the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, sponsored by local Parent-Teacher Associations. Dr. James Behle weighs in on what makes our local staff so special.

Which teacher made a significant difference in your life?  Or, more likely, teachers? As I visit classrooms in St. Michael-Albertville schools, I observe excellent teaching and engaged students.  I enjoy the opportunities not only to watch but also to talk with teachers about their students and what they are learning.  Teacher Appreciation Week and these personal experiences serve as reminders of the differences teachers make in the lives of students every day. I genuinely appreciate their commitment to the students and families of STMA. I want to especially note a constant in each classroom visit–the commitment the teachers make to build relationships with students, recognizing their variety of backgrounds and diverse array of needs. I am…

Canton Still Top Teacher in St. Michael-Albertville's Book

After a grueling, three-month process, Ryan Canton made his way to the final round of the Minnesota Teacher of the Year honors. Though he didn't come back from the banquet with first prize, he felt like a winner.

After more than three months, it all came down to three hours. After that, Ryan Canton, St. Michael-Albertville Middle School West history teacher, could finally do what he wanted. Collapse on his couch and take a nap. No, Canton didn't come back from the Minnesota Teacher of the Year honors with the top prize. However, as one of 10 finalists, selected from the top 120 teachers who were nominated across the state, the fifth-year educator was told by many that it wouldn't be his first trip to the annual banquet last weekend. "I had a few people tell me to stick with it, and that I would be back," Canton said. "I don't know if that's true, but it truly was a great process, and one that kind of reaffirms you as a teacher and what you believe …

St. Michael School's Mama Mallard Makes it Five

For four straight years, Miss Mallory Woods, a mallard hen, has found the Big Woods Elementary School's courtyards a fitting place to lay her eggs.

Mallory Woods, or "mama duck" as the teachers at Big Woods Elementary School like to call her, has made it five. The mallard hen hatched her fifth clutch of eggs, and made it four years in a row, Friday afternoon. Teachers and staff helped Mallory make her way to a pond along Oakwood Parkway, near 47th Lane, to make a new home for her and the seven ducklings she hatched. Mallory laid 13 eggs. Eight hatched, but one duckling didn't survive long, teacher Aaron Heil surmised. "She always lays more than her body can handle," Heil said. "She has to sit on them to keep them all warm, and there's only so much room." Mallory's laid five clutches because last year, she had to lay two. She lost most of her ducklings due to the unseasonable cold last…
