Residents woke up to banging doors and the smell of smoke as a ground floor unit smoldered Saturday at the complex on Wright County Road 37.
UPDATE, 3:25 p.m.: Albertville Fire chief Tate Mills said a cigarette butt that was not completely put out caused the fire, and the department ruled that the fire was accidental. The "careless discard," in which someone threw their cigarette butt right outside the building while it was still lit, started a fire in the partition that separates the unit from the patio at a first-floor unit, Mills said. "The cigarette butt started the bottom of the wall on fire, and the smoke got inside the wall," he said. One apartment unit is displaced temporarily, after firefighters ripped the wall apart to get to the source of the fire. He said the only reason the unit is displaced is because the walls were ripped apart, not because of the fire damage. "…

Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to the main home Tuesday afternoon.
UPDATED 10:23 P.M. The Albertville Fire Chief Tate Mills released a fire report on Tuesday afternoon's fire. "The investigation has been turned over to the homeowner's insurance company," Mills said. The fire is believed to have started inside the RV that was located on the North side of the garage. After the fire completely consumed the RV, the fire spread into the garage and due to a small hole between the garage and the home's firewall, smoke did spread throughout the house. "No one was home during the fire, so there were no injuries," Mills reported. "There is significant damage to the garage and smoke damage inside the home," he added. "We have a great daytime crew that paid dividends in this one," he said, implying the fire could …

A series of brush fires yesterday and throughout the week have kept local fire departments on the go.
Despite a few days of rain lately in March, and a couple more set to come this weekend, the fire index in the St. Michael and Albertville area is still extremely high. This week alone, departments around the area have battled several brush fires, including a controlled burn last night off 70th Street Northeast in Monticello Township that crept out of control. Last night alone, there were three burns, not including a controlled burn around 3 p.m. yesterday in the Crow-Hassan Regional Park, managed by Three Rivers Park District and the Rogers Fire Department, with St. Michael on standby. That fire sent a huge plume of smoke over St. Michael, thanks to winds from the northeast that pushed the flames toward the Crow River and smoke barrelling …

A lack of daytime volunteers, while the majority of the city's fire crew is at work, has the department using "desperate measures."
The Albertville City Council approved a motion to allow city staff to assist in daytime fire emergencies Monday, acting on a request made by Albertville Fire Chief Tate Mills Monday evening. "The fire department is short-staffed for daytime fire emergencies, so we have talked about allowing city employees to respond on an emergency, non-medical basis by driving trucks and manning pumps," Albertville city administrator Larry Kruse told the council Monday night. The Albertville Fire Department currently only has a crew of 5-6 people available during the weekday, daytime hours. Ideally, having a city employee drive the truck or man the pump would free the crew up to fight the fire. "Desperate times call for desperate measures," Albertville …
