Update: Bid to Help Send St. Michael-Albertville Artist to Carnegie Hall

Keaton Van'tHull's art has earned him a trip to the Big Apple. Now he needs the community's help to get there.

St. Michael-Albertville artist Keaton Van't Hull has the opportunity to show his works on one of the nation's biggest stages. His family and teachers are hoping the community will help him get there. Keaton has given permission to Lake Community Bank and the St. Michael-Albertville Rotary to auction off one of his works, which his family hopes will offset the cost of airfare and hotel in New York. The bank donated two Twins tickets for Wednesday, Sept 21st  in the Dugout Box value $160. The bank will have a silent auction form in the lobby for the tickets. A little background: Keaton recently won a National Scholastic Art Award.  There were 185,000 submissions and Keaton was one of 17 Minnesotans who received this special honor. Overall, 1…

Rotary Raises More Than $3,000 with Art and Wine Event

Appreciate Art, Appreciate Rotary was a huge success for local club

There was concern among some St. Michael-Albertville Rotary members that a new event might not bring about the attention it richly deserved. E-mails were sent, stories were requested and attempts were made to rally former Rotary members as well.  But it was evident early on Thursday, Feb. 3, that the club's newest endeavor was a huge hit, as the crowd began to fill the council room at the St. Michael City Center. In the end, Appreciate Art, Appreciate Rotary raised more than $3,000 via its art auction and wine tasting event, making the night a success.  "It's exciting," said Linda Borchardt, a Rotarian and organizer of the event. "It's so great to see so many people." There was plenty of art auctioned, and the local artists also brought in…

St. Michael-Albertville Artist Will Be Featured at Auction

Alex Jossart's pencil drawing will be a local piece auctioned off by State of the Art at the inaugural "Appreciate Art, Appreciate Rotary" event.

For any artist, it's a humbling experience to have a piece purchased. At an auction, however, a totally new ingredient is added, as people sort of, well, fight over a prized piece with their bids. "I'm really interested to see what happens," said Alex Jossart, who, at the ripe age of 18 will see a piece of his own auctioned at the first-ever "Appreciate Art, Appreciate Rotary" event. Following a suggestion by State of the Art, the auction company that will conduct Thursday night's live auction, St. Michael-Albertville Rotary approached the high school art department for one, local piece to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Art teacher Kari Halker thought Jossart deserved the honor. "He's worked so hard to become the artist he is …

St. Michael-Albertville's Veterans About to Be Homeless

The St. Michael American Legion is set to close Jan. 29, according to an agreement with the new Walgreens store and the City of St. Michael. Trouble is, the Legion hasn't found a new home ... yet.

St. Michael-Albertville's veterans will lose their primary gathering space at the end of this month. The St. Michael American Legion Post 567, which has been operating on Main Street for nearly 30 years, will be closing its doors Saturday, Jan. 29. The current location has been in use since 1981, according to Ron Kohorst, the current financial manager and club officer for St. Michael. It has served the community well since then, and since its founding in March of 1946.  Residents can still view the minutes of the very first meeting and find out a lot about the history of the place by talking to many of the members, who have participated since the 1950s. The current building has housed many events, including the annual fish fry, Santa party…
