Sandy Greninger applied for and received a grant from the Home Depot Foundation for the BMX track.
Construction began last Thursday at the St. Michael BMX track. FYCC director Sandy Greninger had applied and received a $14,300 grant from the Home Depot Foundation to do some repairs and additions to the track. All materials and supplies are covered by Home Depot. Twenty-five employees from the Monticello, Elk River and Maple Grove stores volunteered to help with the construction. "They all volunteered their time or took a vacation day," Greninger said. In addition to the Home Depot volunteers, 15 FYCC volunteers also helped. Construction isn't complete as of yet but will continue. This Thursday crews will be working on a TUFFShed and another construction day will be scheduled soon to complete the remainder of the work. With a new operator changing up the St. Michael BMX track, kids of all ages are enjoying the changes to the track.
Back in its heyday 10 years ago, St. Michael’s BMX track-located in the recreation center on the south side of town-was a magnet for riding enthusiasts from around the region. But turnout began sliding for several years as repairs and maintenance stacked up and some of the advanced riders found the track to be not as challenging as they had hoped. This year a new track operator has been working with some dedicated volunteers to right the track’s course-with encouraging results thus far. After talking with expert level riders about their concerns and complaints, the crew decided to put in “Mount St. Michael,” a 33-foot step triple jump, which track maintenance leader Troy Stebens called “good for all ages.” Pros can come and attempt to …

JR's Pub and Grill will be appealing a failed alcohol compliance check Tuesday at the city's biweekly meeting.
One of the more established restaurants in St. Michael will be looking to discuss a relatviely "rookie" mistake when it appears in front of the St. Michael City Council at Tuesday's regular meeting. JR's Pub and Grill will be appealing a $250 fine after failing an alcohol compliance check performed last month, in cooperation with the Wright County Sheriff's Department. Two other local establishments also failed the checks. Super America and the Liberty Restaurant and Bar (St. Michael American Legion) chose to waive their right to a public hearing and discussion with the council and will pay the $250. The hearing should start shortly after 7 p.m. at the St. Michael City Center building's council chambers. Other items on the July 26 …

BMX is back in St. Michael as the city hosts Opens Ride Nights at the newly refurbished St. Michael Recreation Center Track.
From 6 to 8 p.m. every Thursday evening through August you will find a tenacious group of bikers, anywhere from age 3 to 70-plus, hitting the dirt track at St. Michael’s Recreation Center. Located just off Highway 19 on the south side of town-address 3150 Lander Ave. NE- the BMX biking track had been in a state of disrepair until former pro BMX racer Troy Stebens got control of the reins last year, spending some serious time getting the track back into good riding condition along with his friend and fellow rider, Joe Porter. Though the city owns the property, the track is leased out and privately maintained by a track operator-a position Stebens thoroughly enjoys. “I jumped at the chance; I kind of always wanted to be a track operator,” …
