The St. Michael Relay For Life is Friday, July 27 and has special new meaning to one family.
When 14 year old Kelly Zajac's cousin, Yvonne, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma, Kelly wanted to do something. After looking on the internet for something, anything she could do to help, she found the St. Michael-Albertville Relay for Life on the internet and decided to create a team. "I've lived in St. Michael for 15 years and never knew there was a Relay for Life event right here," her mom Cheri said. Kelly and her sister Rachel even gave up their week at the cabin to make sure they would be in town for the event, saying the Relay for Life event was more important. " It is amazing how priorities change once something like cancer shakes your family to the core. It makes it especially hard that it is happening to a child," …

For the last 15 months, Bill Radintz has battled cancer but he's not one to complain or be scared. "I'm still here," is his motto.
On March 17, 2011, St. Michael mom of three, Lara Radintz woke up to find her 34 year old husband, Bill, having a seizure in bed next to her. The next few moments were a blur of calling an ambulance, her inlaws and wondering what was going on. Upon arriving at the Maple Grove Hospital, the initial CT scan showed a significant mass in the right frontal lobe, so Bill, who hadn't had headaches, dizziness or any likely symptoms, was headed to Robbinsdale. Once the two were at Robbinsdale and settled on the neuro floor, Lara knew this was serious. "At this point no one had said anything about cancer but it was in my mind," Lara said. The neurosurgeon informed Bill of their findings. A brain tumor the size of a large dinner roll or baseball. "My…

While Erin Brokovich’s organization has expressed new interest in the Twin Cities area, one rural St. Michael resident has had her eye on the situation for years. One concern she has: the level of radon in Wright County homes.
Marylin DeMars is having a bad case of déjà vu. The rural St. Michael resident, who now lives within the borders of Otsego, has been watching cancer take friends and family over the last two decades like never before. She, too, has wondered if it was something environmental, or construction-based, that caused more than a handful of neighbors, friends, and even her husband to battle cancer. Some lived through it all. Some, like good friend Bob Berning, did not. “It’s just something I always wondered then,” she said in a phone call recently. “I still wonder now.” Residents here share her concern, in Monticello and as deep into the suburbs as Fridley, where more than 2,500 people have joined a Facebook group that discusses Fridley cancer …
