Twin Cities-Area Fish Fry: Who's Hosting One This Lent?

If your Catholic church, group or business is operating one this year, here's how you can let us know.

We're eager to get the word out to our readers about where they can find fish fries this Lenten season. If your business, Catholic church or group is operating one this year, please fill out this form with the details. We'll compile the list of fries that we get and make sure that information is available to our readers throughout the season. An Associated Press article published in USA Today called fish fries "a timeworn Catholic tradition that provides a safe haven from divides that have long roiled the U.S. church, a place where traditionalist Catholics, progressive Catholics and everyone in between can sit peacefully at the same plastic tablecloth." If you're looking at this on a mobile device, please come back and visit when you're at…

St. Michael, St. Paul Church Leaders React to Pope Bendedict's Retirement

As one of the diocese's largest suburban Catholic communities, St. Michael Catholic Church will feel the impact of Pope Benedict's decision to step down.

Fr. Peter Richards, head of St. Michael Catholic Church and one of the largest parishes outside of the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis proper, was settling down from a brief vacation when he was given the startling news: Pope Benedict XVI had decided to step down from the church's highest calling, effective the end of this month.  "We will miss Pope Benedict XVI," Fr. Richards said in a response to St. Michae Patch. "This is something he has prayed, consulted and deliberated about and even at the tomb of the first Pope to resign." That was more than 600 years ago, when St. Celestine resigned near the end of the 13th Century. Unlike St. Celestine, Pope Benedict, who will return to his status as Cardinal Joeseph Ratzinger at the end …

Parent Talk: It's Preschool Registration Time in St. Michael-Albertville

It's preschool registration time around the community, and there is a wide array of options for St. Michael-Albertville families.

September may seem a long way down the road, but for preschool parents the time is now to make the decision: if and where their little one is going to preschool next year. Opinions differ across the board on the preschool question. Some feel their kids would be at a disadvantage for not attending preschool, and that it fully prepares them for kindergarten. Others say that it would have been an unnecessary expense and possibly traumatic seperation. Not only is preschool expensive, but even the registration fees can add up when you're dealing with a lottery system at registration time. Most of the local preschools do registration either via first come–first serve, or a lottery drawing. That means you're not guaranteed your spot OR the times …

Historic Trinity Chapel Settles in on St. Michael's South Side

The hand-made chapel will be dedicated at its new site this Sunday.

Take just a short drive down Wright County 19 in St. Michael and turn onto 30th street and you’ll happen across a small little chapel. "Trinity Chapel," the wooden, aged sign reads outside. While the chapel is new to its current location, it’s not new to St. Michael. In 1980, Bob Weeks, built the chapel on his property near Mud Lake. The chapel’s furnishings were all donated by the St. Michael Catholic Church, because they supported Weeks’ mission. His chapel was open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week–the lights never shut off. While the chapel had no insulation or heating, that didn’t detour visitors from making their visit. “The chapel was open for anything from weddings to funerals to baptisms or just for those struggling needing a place to…

As Loretto Catholic School Closes, St. Michael Making Room

The Academy of Saints Peter and Paul, Loretto, announced it will close its doors, leaving about 70 Catholic-educated students without a school.

One community's loss may turn out to be St. Michael's gain, as St. Michael Catholic School attempts to help some local families find a home for kids who will be without a school next year.  The Academy of Saints Peter and Paul, which operated in Loretto, about 10 miles south of Hanover at the intersection of Wright County Road 19 and Minnesota Highway 55, announced it would close its doors after completing the 2010-2011 school year.  "There were phone calls coming, so I knew Friday, May 13 that this was going to be something that was going to impact our school," said Jennifer Haller, principal at St. Michael Catholic School.  With the 2011-2012 year already a year of change and addition – St. Michael is adding seventh grade back to the …

Jesus' Passion and Death Comes to Life at the Historic Church of St.Michael

The "living stations" are an annual draw, powered by the real drama of the crucifixion.

Christian churches have had "Passion Plays" for centuries but St. Michael Catholic Church has only had its "Living Stations of the Cross" since the late 1980s, when Fr.Denny Dempsey  brought the idea to the liturgy committee, and a small group of about six to eight people acted out the passion and death of Christ. With makeshift costumes, music, a lector and a narrator, the first "Living Stations" was performed, and has continued to this day.  So many years and many volunteers later, the costumes are more elaborate and the acting and special effects much more polished, but they still have the same impact to the audience as they did from the beginning.  The group works for a just a few days to get the cast, costumes, and lines figured out …

The Living Stations is an amazingly powerful event that allows you to feel a part of this miraculous event. The Passion that Jesus suffered and the stations that he went through to carry our sins is so powerful and when you get to see them right in front of you, it makes you appreciate him and his sacrifice even more. This is my second year watching them and everyone does such a remarkable job in…   more ›
