The St. Michael-Albertville School Board at its Jan. 22 meeting approved a $10,000 contribution to the St. Michael-Albertville Arena for maintenance and upkeep of the facility. The Albertville City Council also approved a $10,000 payment at its early January meeting. The City of St. Michael approved its $10,000 portion in August 2012, and has already made the payment to the arena. The $30,000 will go strictly to the maintenance and equipment needs of the facility, said Grant Fitch, arena manager. The school district and two cities jointly own the arena. The St. Michael City Council will consider a property tax levy increase of about three percent Tuesday night at its regular meeting when the proposed 2013 city budget will be considered. The council meeting is set for 7 p.m. at St. Michael City Hall. Depending on changes in a property's market value, and the statewide changes in homestead exclusions, homeowners will see either an increase or decrease in their city property taxes that could be more or less than the 2.99 percent levy increase, said Steve Bot, city administrator, engineer and public works director, in a prepared statement. A Wednesday night fire has service crews working hard to keep the "juice" flowing around St. Michael.
A Wednesday night fire in St. Michael has knocked out a major transformer, and utility crews are working at making an emergency replacement. Because of that, residents and businesses have been put on notice by City of St. Michael staff that periodic power outages, particularly west of County Road 19, could happen today. According to a message from City Engineer Steve Bot, the fire happened late Wednesday night and badly damaged a transformer in town. Crews were able to knock down the fire (transformer fires can burn hot because they're often packed with an oil), but not before it caused the damage. Shop Saint Michael is teaming up with the St. Michael Economic Development Authority to present a web-centric seminar for small businesses and business owners. The City of St. Michael laid out its legislative positions, including a plea to find a financial solution behind the proposed Voter ID Amendment.
The City of St. Michael sent council members Nadine Schoen and Chris Schumm to St. Paul recently to meet with the community’s local legislators, including Rep. Joe McDonald and Sen. Amy Koch. Assistant City Administrator Steve Bot, who will become the city’s lead man when Administrator Bob Derus retires in June, accompanied the two. The city is looking for new ways to manage high water levels on the lake, beyond spending more than $50,000 in unbudgeted funds, as it did last year.
Residents of Beebe Lake are invited to attend a neighborhood information meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at city hall with members of the St. Michael City Council as the city and the lake’s association team up to address water woes along the lake. City staff will present St. Michael’s plans to evaluate options and ultimately come up with a solution for the lake’s flooding issues, with hopes that a new plan will be implemented some time in 2012. The I-94 West Chamber of Commerce welcomed city leaders and local businesses to St. Michael City Hall for the annual report Tuesday afternoon.
Business leaders and government officials met once again Tuesday as the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce brought both sides together for its annual State of the Cities event. If the 2011 message last year at St. Michael City Hall was, "We've hit rock bottom," the collective 2012 message was, "We hope the turnaround is as fast as the crash was." St. Michael Mayor Jerry Zachman welcomed the contingent, which included representatives from neighbors such as Hanover, Albertville, Dayton, Otsego and Rogers to the city center. Albertville joined the many cities utilizing single-sort recycling carts for residents last year. Now, St. Michael is looking to get its program spread citywide.
St. Michael officials are ready to ditch the blue bin, and move head with a blue-and-yellow cart. The city's recycling program has been a huge success, according the City Engineer and Assistant Administrator Steven Bot, with more materials being recycled each year. With that success first came the option (in January 2010) for residents to "buy in" on a single-sort program, where homeowners can dump recyclables, without sorting, into a large, 65-gallon cart by city partner Veolia Environmental Services/Veolia Recycling. A survey mailed to the more than 5,400 households of St. Michael in April has revealed a well-known void in the community.
A survey conducted by the Shop Saint Michael organization in conjunction with the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce revealed St. Michael consumers have some wants and needs that aren't being met, but are pleased with the overall state of the community. Of the more than 5,400 surveys mailed out with cooperation from the City of St. Michael (via water usage bills), the group received more than 335 responses, or a return rate of about 6 percent.
