St. Michael-Albertville School Board and Cities Approve $10,000 Contribution Each for Upkeep of Ice Arena

The school board and City of Albertville approved the amount in January. The City of St. Michael paid its share in August 2012.

The St. Michael-Albertville School Board at its Jan. 22 meeting approved a $10,000 contribution to the St. Michael-Albertville Arena for maintenance and upkeep of the facility. The Albertville City Council also approved a $10,000 payment at its early January meeting. The City of St. Michael approved its $10,000 portion in August 2012, and has already made the payment to the arena. The $30,000 will go strictly to the maintenance and equipment needs of the facility, said Grant Fitch, arena manager. The school district and two cities jointly own the arena. "Most rinks don't have cash flow each year," Fitch said. "As the building gets old, you're looking at repairs and a Zamboni, which a new one costs around $115,000." A Zamboni is a machine…

City of St. Michael Expected to Consider Slight Increase in Levy Tonight

The city will consider and take action on its 2013 budget in its last meeting of the year.

The St. Michael City Council will consider a property tax levy increase of about three percent Tuesday night at its regular meeting when the proposed 2013 city budget will be considered. The council meeting is set for 7 p.m. at St. Michael City Hall. Depending on changes in a property's market value, and the statewide changes in homestead exclusions, homeowners will see either an increase or decrease in their city property taxes that could be more or less than the 2.99 percent levy increase, said Steve Bot, city administrator, engineer and public works director, in a prepared statement. "The recent state property tax law changes with homestead exclusions have shifted more of the tax burden to agricultural and commercial/industrial …

Power Outages Probable as Xcel Makes Repairs around St. Michael

A Wednesday night fire has service crews working hard to keep the "juice" flowing around St. Michael.

A Wednesday night fire in St. Michael has knocked out a major transformer, and utility crews are working at making an emergency replacement.  Because of that, residents and businesses have been put on notice by City of St. Michael staff that periodic power outages, particularly west of County Road 19, could happen today.  According to a message from City Engineer Steve Bot, the fire happened late Wednesday night and badly damaged a transformer in town. Crews were able to knock down the fire (transformer fires can burn hot because they're often packed with an oil), but not before it caused the damage.  Xcel was working with the city to make a quick, emergency change on the transformer by 7 a.m. Thursday. Residents reported brief outages on …

St. Michael Council Members Meet with Local Legislators in St. Paul

The City of St. Michael laid out its legislative positions, including a plea to find a financial solution behind the proposed Voter ID Amendment.

The City of St. Michael sent council members Nadine Schoen and Chris Schumm to St. Paul recently to meet with the community’s local legislators, including Rep. Joe McDonald and Sen. Amy Koch. Assistant City Administrator Steve Bot, who will become the city’s lead man when Administrator Bob Derus retires in June, accompanied the two. Schumm and Schoen returned to the Capitol, recently, for a day of meetings courtesy of the League of Minnesota Cities. While in St. Paul, the two discussed the city’s stance on a variety of proposed legislation, asking for the state to heed more communities’ calls on issues that have local impact. Near the top of the list was the so-called Voter ID Amendment, which will ask voters to approve a new police asking…

Mike The Voter ID constitutional amendment that will be voted on this November isn't "police" or policy. It would be state law. You are confusing the two. And to respond to Bot's comment -- yes, there will be additional expenses in this election cycle and the next to educate voters on the changes to voting procedure if the amendment passes. Small price to pay to remedy an overdue fix to ensure …   more ›

City of St. Michael, Beebe Lake Homeowners to Meet Tonight

The city is looking for new ways to manage high water levels on the lake, beyond spending more than $50,000 in unbudgeted funds, as it did last year.

Residents of Beebe Lake are invited to attend a neighborhood information meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at city hall with members of the St. Michael City Council as the city and the lake’s association team up to address water woes along the lake. City staff will present St. Michael’s plans to evaluate options and ultimately come up with a solution for the lake’s flooding issues, with hopes that a new plan will be implemented some time in 2012. According to City Engineer Steve Bot, also the city’s assistant administrator, the City of St. Michael spent more than $50,000 last year in unbudgeted funds to sandbag, pump and control water levels on the lake, which rose to record levels due to heavy snow in 2011 and rains throughout the spring. St. Michael, Albertville and Other City Leaders Give Annual Update

The I-94 West Chamber of Commerce welcomed city leaders and local businesses to St. Michael City Hall for the annual report Tuesday afternoon.

Business leaders and government officials met once again Tuesday as the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce brought both sides together for its annual State of the Cities event. If the 2011 message last year at St. Michael City Hall was, "We've hit rock bottom," the collective 2012 message was, "We hope the turnaround is as fast as the crash was." St. Michael Mayor Jerry Zachman welcomed the contingent, which included representatives from neighbors such as Hanover, Albertville, Dayton, Otsego and Rogers to the city center. Businesses from most, if not all, of those communities were represented by the about 100 or so people in attendance. "I think I speak for everyone when I say that it's been a tough couple of years," said outgoing St. Michael …

St. Michael Could Be Latest Community to Use Single Sort Carts

Albertville joined the many cities utilizing single-sort recycling carts for residents last year. Now, St. Michael is looking to get its program spread citywide.

St. Michael officials are ready to ditch the blue bin, and move head with a blue-and-yellow cart. The city's recycling program has been a huge success, according the City Engineer and Assistant Administrator Steven Bot, with more materials being recycled each year. With that success first came the option (in January 2010) for residents to "buy in" on a single-sort program, where homeowners can dump recyclables, without sorting, into a large, 65-gallon cart by city partner Veolia Environmental Services/Veolia Recycling. For a fee, homeowners could opt-out of the 18-gallon bin and upgrade to the cart. "It's been a very big success, with more than 1,000 homes going that direction," Bot said. "And it's increased our recycling stats by a pretty…

As empty nesters, we don't have the need for a cart, not to mention where to put it. Also as I understand it, the City is proposing a $2.50 mandatory monthly fee. This is on top of existing high property taxes and a proposed 2.48% levy increase for next year. Do they not know were in a recession.   more ›

St. Michael Receives Results of Citywide Survey

A survey mailed to the more than 5,400 households of St. Michael in April has revealed a well-known void in the community.

A survey conducted by the Shop Saint Michael organization in conjunction with the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce revealed St. Michael consumers have some wants and needs that aren't being met, but are pleased with the overall state of the community.  Of the more than 5,400 surveys mailed out with cooperation from the City of St. Michael  (via water usage bills), the group received more than 335 responses, or a return rate of about 6 percent.  "That's pretty good when it comes to these kinds of things," said Kathleen Poate, president of the I-94 West Chamber. "We were pleased." The survey aimed to gauge the consumer climate in St. Michael. What businesses were succeeding in town? Where were consumers headed for other services?  Gasoline and …

I agree with the safety issue at the one way intersection as well as not being able to see if anyone is coming. I hate being the 1st person going after the light turns green because you can't see at all if anyone is coming thru on the red...Isn't there a way to put up some type of mirror so people know or a blinking light if a vehicle is sensored and not stopping?   more ›
