St. Michael Receives Results of Citywide Survey

A survey mailed to the more than 5,400 households of St. Michael in April has revealed a well-known void in the community.

A survey conducted by the Shop Saint Michael organization in conjunction with the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce revealed St. Michael consumers have some wants and needs that aren't being met, but are pleased with the overall state of the community.  Of the more than 5,400 surveys mailed out with cooperation from the City of St. Michael  (via water usage bills), the group received more than 335 responses, or a return rate of about 6 percent.  "That's pretty good when it comes to these kinds of things," said Kathleen Poate, president of the I-94 West Chamber. "We were pleased." The survey aimed to gauge the consumer climate in St. Michael. What businesses were succeeding in town? Where were consumers headed for other services?  Gasoline and …

I agree with the safety issue at the one way intersection as well as not being able to see if anyone is coming. I hate being the 1st person going after the light turns green because you can't see at all if anyone is coming thru on the red...Isn't there a way to put up some type of mirror so people know or a blinking light if a vehicle is sensored and not stopping?   more ›

Snow Removal Slowly Becoming a Giant Issue in St. Michael

As more flakes fall in the St. Michael area, city leaders are working out the logistics of snow removal on roads already packed with the stuff.

In a brief update at the final 2010 meeting of the St. Michael City Council, City Public Works Director Steve Bot may have delivered the understatement of the year when he updated the group on snow removal. “This last month has been pretty intense,” he said. Indeed, December was St. Michael’s snowiest in its more than a century-long history, and snow piles are still building up across the community as each week seems to be bring more measurable snowfall. “It’s been a heck of a challenge,” Bot said. “Just to manage things has taken a huge amount of time and effort from our public works department. The snow seems to drop every week, so it’s becoming a logistical thing now as to where to put it.” Bot said the normal practice of piling snow in…

St. Michael City Council Set to Act on 2011 Budget, Levy

The council will also decide on cost-saving measures proposed by city administrator Bob Derus, including a reduction in staff hours and mandated furloughs.

St. Michael City Council members will take action on the 2011 general fund levy and the 2011 final budget at tonight's meeting, setting a financial course for the next year in St. Michael. The general levy will be set at $4.9 million at the most. The council can go down from the preliminary number it approved at past meetings, but cannot raise the levy, per state law. That levy will cost the average homeowner (valued at $197,300) $636 annually, or $53 per month. The general fund would increase by less than 2 percent from last year, mostly due to payments on the new St. Michael City Center, as well as a pair of tax abatements approved in 2010. The council will also decide on two measures proposed budget levy within arms reach of the desired…

New Library at St. Michael City Center is Packing In Patrons

Great River Regional Library, which staffs the St. Michael facility, expected an uptick in library guests. The results have exceeded expectations.

If you build it, they will come.  And how.  In a typical community with a new library, Great River Regional Library System (GRRL) has seen a 30 percent increase of usage. But St. Michael-Albertville has proved to be not so typical. Within the first two weeks of opening the new library, GRRL reported a 50 percent increase. "My favorite part is seeing their faces light up when they walk in for the very first time," Marla Scherber, librarian at the St. Michael facility, said. The new St. Michael-Albertville-Hanover library has been a project 10 years in the making. The community was quickly outgrowing the space in Colonial Mall, Scherber, the librarian for the past five years, said. There were needs for more computers, more space. "A more …

St. Michael EDA Eyeing a Busy 2011

With several projects on the city's desk, 2011 could be a successful year on the commercial real estate front for St. Michael.

If everything that's appearing on the St. Michael Economic Development Authority board's agenda comes to fruition in 2011, it's going to be a busy construction year around the area. A list of activities prepared for the board last week by St. Michael Community Development Director Marc Weigle includes everything from an 80,000 square-foot fitness facility to a new commercial development near the intersection of Interstate 94 and Minnesota Highway 241. "There are a lot of hypotheticals," Weigle told the board. "But at least there's interest in the community." Flagship Fitness has approached the city about a possible development north of Allina Medical Clinic, and east of the St Michael Catholic Church. The huge facility would include a gym/…

St. Michael Shares Motivation for 2011 Budget

City Administrator Bob Derus will take the floor tonight at the city's annual Truth in Taxation Hearing, held at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of the new St. Michael City Center.

At the crux of Derus' presentation will be a 2 percent increase in spending in 2011, mostly attributed to a $140,000 annual payment the city now makes to pay for the new community center. Other new spending for 2011 comes from two abatement programs, one to pay for sound reduction measures around St. Michael company J&B Meats, and another paid to U.S. Water. Spending reductions are also in the works, however. The city has reduced its payments to the St. Michael Economic Development Authority by more than half ($135,000 in 2010 to just $65,000 in 2011), thanks to slow growth in the regional economy. A reduction in overall staff hours is set for 2011, with some departments seeing personnel dropped from full time to half time (equivalency), …
