When a family member or loved one suffers from memory loss such as dementia or Alzheimer's, the holidays can still be a good time, says Lori La Bey, founder of Alzheimer's Speaks.
The holiday season is one of the most stressful times of the year for scores of people. The pressure to do it all- buy gifts, send out cards, bake cookies and make the rounds at holiday parties- can seem overwhelming. And the season can seem extra stressful for people who have a family member or loved one with memory problems. The reality is that trying to create wonderful or special memories during the season may seem mostly lost on a person with dementia or Alzheiner's. So how do you cope? It's a busy day for both Black Friday shoppers and families out getting just the perfect tree.
Thanksgiving has past and the Christmas season has officially kicked off. Families will flock to tree lots and tree farms today to get their trees. That is, if they aren't Black Friday shopping. If you're looking to buy a pre-cut Christmas tree in St. Michael-Albertville there are three local options: Schulte's Nursery has pre-cut trees and other assorted greenery for the Holidays and will be open regular business hours today and through the weekend. The Knights of Columbus is having their annual Christmas tree sale at the St. Michael Catholic School. An assortment of trees is available as well as wreaths. Bring 3 or more canned items for a food shelf donation and receive $5 off your tree. They will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. …

Honesty, fairness and the promotion of goodwill and friendships are characteristics of the next St. Michael "Holiday Cheermeister." The selected individual will have the honor of lighitng St. Michael's new holiday tree Nov. 27 at St. Michael City Center. St. Michael-Albertville Rotary and Shop Saint Michael are taking nominations for the cheermeister until Oct. 31. Nominees for Holiday Cheermeister must be either St. Michael residents, be involved in a St. Michael organization or own or work at a St. Michael business. Nominees should be actively involved in the St. Michael community, embody the holiday spirit, and exemplify the rotary’s "Four-Way Test," which asks: of the things we think, say or do: is it the truth; is it fair to all …
Caroling, holiday stories, and a visit from Santa are included.
Holiday spirit will light the town, beginning with a holiday tree lighting celebration Nov. 27. Songs will be sung and holiday stories will be read at the event, which takes place at 6 p.m. at St. Michael City Center. A visit from Santa is slated for that night. The free event will include caroling by St. Michael-Albertville High School’s choir, caroling and a sing-a-long led by the Crow River Senior Center choir, holiday stories read by Friends of the Library and local rotarians. The event will include a toy and children’s book drive for the Hanover Area Food Shelf. Free hot dogs, chili, cookies and cocoa will be served. Hi Heyitsme, I tend to agree - the holidays are about enjoying time with family & firends and they often involve unique, enjoyable, albeit less-than-healthy, food-related customs, traditions, and events.
