Maple Grove ended St. Michael-Albertville's season with a stingy defense and an offense that's clicking on all cylinders.
The Crimson appear to be getting red hot at the right time. After a disappointing, one-point loss to Anoka back on March 4 to close the regular seaosn, Maple Grove seems to be playing with a chip on its proverbial shoulder. They crushed No. 5 Alexandria to open the Section 8-4A tournament with an 90-63 victory. Saturday, they moved to the championship game with a 70-51 defeat of St. Michael-Albertville at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud. The Knights went cold from the field in the second half, and Maple Grove was able to rely on its offense, which has averaged nearly 75 points per game over the last five games, to cruise to victory. The Crimson will take on Buffalo Saturday in the Section 8 title game Thursday, March 17 back at St. Cloud …

The boys' basketball team enters into an eight-day gauntlet Friday night when it travels to Becker. The stretch culminates vs. Moorhead next Saturday.
St. Michael-Albertville knocked off Big Lake at the high school gym Tuesday evening, leaving the Knights boys' basketball team as one of two unbeaten teams remaining in the Mississippi 8. Granted, most teams are only two or three games into their conference schedule heading into this weekend. But the achievement wasn't lost on coach Tim Anfenson, especially when his squad stumbled out to a 1-3 start. "Part of it was us, part of it was the competition we played. We had Orono, who is state-ranked. There was Maple Grove, who is a very strong big school this year. And we couldn't stay with a good Hutchinson team," Anfenson said. "Plus, we were trying new lineups and we really weren't sure who we were as a team." Things began to come together…

The game was scoreless until the 8:46 mark of the second period, when captain Ashley McDonald found junior Sam Pitts in front of the Icebreakers net, and she found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. St. Cloud bounced back however with the first two goals of the third period. But, when the 'Hawks needed a goal, North Wright County went back …
