Three Albertville businesses located at the intersection of County Road 37 and Main Street are changing with the New Year.
After a year of construction, traffic changes and re-routes along Interstate 94 and the County Road 37 exit, three Albertville businesses closest to the exit are struggling and in turn, making some changes. Sunoco gas station closed seemingly overnight this week. The store was locked up tight Monday night, with signs turned off and bags over pump handles. Shelves inside the convenience store were bare. With the closing came rumors that the convenience store giant Kwik Trip purchased the station, but the St. Michael Kwik Trip would neither confirm or deny the story. Gas prices in the St. Michael area have hit the dreaded $4 mark. Both Mobil in Albertville and Kwik Trip in St. Michael pushed prices higher today, with standard unleaded gasoline now sitting at $4 per gallon. That's more than a quarter higher than just a couple of weeks ago, and up more than 37 cents since hitting a low of $3.62 for the summer back on Aug. 21. Representatives from the buyer looking to make the former movie theater into a retail site will be on hand to discuss, among other things, signage for the building.
The buyer of the former Cinemagic Movie Theater building will be in front of the St. Michael Planning and Zoning Commission tonight to discuss, among other things, an increase in signage for the future retail location. Commercial Realty Solutions, located in Buffalo, is representing the prospective buyer, and does not wish to divulge the building’s new tenant(s) at this time. But the City of St. Michael has already agreed to change the building to a retail site within its B-1 Zoning District. The 413th Kwik Trip location in the Upper Midwest made its opening official last week, with a visit from CEO Don Zietlow and other dignitaries.
St. Michael's Kwik Trip officially launched its grand opening celebration last week, complete with a ribbon cutting, some cool give-aways and a visit from store executives. The ribbon cutting/store unveiling (though the store had been open for about two weeks) included a visit from Don Zietlow, CEO of Kwik Trip, which is based in LaCrosse, Wis. "The employees here will have a chance to have a piece of this location some day in the future," Zietlow said, outlining the company's "buy back" program, where, once the store is paid off, the portion paid for rent gets re-directed to the site's employees. For the past few months, the news coming from the business corridor near St. Michael's intersection with Interstate 94 at Highway 241 (Central Avenue) has been frustrating. Talks to reboot the Cinemagic Theater have fizzled. Tough turf conditions and water levels hampered Fox Hollow early in the season. But the fall has been a sort of "spring awakening" for the area. First, the Minnesota Department of Transporation has installed much-needed traffic signals at the eastbound exit ramp, where 94 feeds to 241.
