Local businesses say the road conditions have spurted needs over the weekend. Gas station stops, pizza delivery orders, and towing services have increased.
Frustrated drivers, spin-outs on the freeway, and those who are hungry but not leaving home have boosted business in St. Michael and Albertville during the weekend blizzard. Have photos of the snow in your neighborhood? Upload them to this article. Kwik Trip in St. Michael, Burda's Towing, and St. Michael Domino's Pizza attribute road conditions to their increase in business today. The several hours of stop-and-go traffic on I-94 eastbound from St. Michael to Maple Grove in near-impossible driving conditions have brought in frustrated people to Kwik Trip in St. Michael, said manager Jerome Haberman. "They get off the road and take a breather, get a warm cup of coffee — get out some frustations and walk for a minute before they get back …

This week's roundup also includes news on a new bar in Southwest Minneapolis, Edina's top students and business changes in St. Michael-Albertville.
Editor’s Note: Every week we will bring you a sampling of stories from Patch sites in the west metro: Eden Prairie, Edina, Fridley, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Lake Minnetonka, Maple Grove, Plymouth, Richfield, Southwest Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, and St. Michael. Southwest LRT Typo Underestimates Co-location Costs by $100M Engineering consultants have identified a $100 million typo in a Southwest Light Rail Transit report that understates the cost of putting the Twin Cities & Western freight line in the same corridor as the light rail—an option known as “co-location.” The correction narrows the gap between the co-location option and the so-called “locally preferred alternative” that would reroute freight rail to a spur line in St. Louis …

Three Albertville businesses located at the intersection of County Road 37 and Main Street are changing with the New Year.
After a year of construction, traffic changes and re-routes along Interstate 94 and the County Road 37 exit, three Albertville businesses closest to the exit are struggling and in turn, making some changes. Sunoco gas station closed seemingly overnight this week. The store was locked up tight Monday night, with signs turned off and bags over pump handles. Shelves inside the convenience store were bare. With the closing came rumors that the convenience store giant Kwik Trip purchased the station, but the St. Michael Kwik Trip would neither confirm or deny the story. However, Albertville City Engineer Adam Nafstad told St. Michael Patch that "Sunoco closed late last week and has entered in a purchase agreement with Kwik Trip. It is my …

As oil prices push the cost of filling your tank higher, Patch has you covered.
Gas prices in the St. Michael area have hit the dreaded $4 mark. Both Mobil in Albertville and Kwik Trip in St. Michael pushed prices higher today, with standard unleaded gasoline now sitting at $4 per gallon. That's more than a quarter higher than just a couple of weeks ago, and up more than 37 cents since hitting a low of $3.62 for the summer back on Aug. 21. For up-to-date gas prices, click on the Commute link under the "More Stuff" tab on Patch's main page.

Representatives from the buyer looking to make the former movie theater into a retail site will be on hand to discuss, among other things, signage for the building.
The buyer of the former Cinemagic Movie Theater building will be in front of the St. Michael Planning and Zoning Commission tonight to discuss, among other things, an increase in signage for the future retail location. Commercial Realty Solutions, located in Buffalo, is representing the prospective buyer, and does not wish to divulge the building’s new tenant(s) at this time. But the City of St. Michael has already agreed to change the building to a retail site within its B-1 Zoning District. In his report to the St. Michael Planning and Zoning Commission, Community Development Director outlined a few main bullet points. First, the developer is looking to add signage to the site, something for which the board would have to grant an …

The 413th Kwik Trip location in the Upper Midwest made its opening official last week, with a visit from CEO Don Zietlow and other dignitaries.
St. Michael's Kwik Trip officially launched its grand opening celebration last week, complete with a ribbon cutting, some cool give-aways and a visit from store executives. The ribbon cutting/store unveiling (though the store had been open for about two weeks) included a visit from Don Zietlow, CEO of Kwik Trip, which is based in LaCrosse, Wis. "The employees here will have a chance to have a piece of this location some day in the future," Zietlow said, outlining the company's "buy back" program, where, once the store is paid off, the portion paid for rent gets re-directed to the site's employees. It's a tactic that has made Zietlow one of the region's most admired executives, and made Kwik Trip one of the fastest-growing companies in its …

St. Michael's new Kwik Trip, along with other stores, are sending savings on fuel, more, through snail mail. Stack up and save.
Weekly Tip: Gas Station Flyers Last week I talked about looking in your mailbox for savings at grocery stores. This week, I wanted to tell you about gas station mailers. These flyers will come in your mailbox from time to time. You wouldn’t normally think that the local gas station has better prices on groceries, but sometimes they do! Gas stations will send out advertisements to your home periodically. This past week, I got a great flyer from Kwik Trip in St. Michael. They are having their Grand Opening sale with great coupon savings. The flyer they sent out is not available in stores, but it’s worth digging through your junk mail for this one. There are lots of freebies in that flyer. I’ve also gotten some great coupons mailed to my …

The huge commercial project will anchor the commercial portion of the Hans Hagen Development, and gives a much-needed spark to the I-94 and Highway 241 corner.
For the past few months, the news coming from the business corridor near St. Michael's intersection with Interstate 94 at Highway 241 (Central Avenue) has been frustrating. Talks to reboot the Cinemagic Theater have fizzled. Tough turf conditions and water levels hampered Fox Hollow early in the season. But the fall has been a sort of "spring awakening" for the area. First, the Minnesota Department of Transporation has installed much-needed traffic signals at the eastbound exit ramp, where 94 feeds to 241. Now, Kwik Trip has opened to public, unveiling its $3 million store, which includes a full car wash, diesel service and an expansive convenience store. "It's pretty nice," said one person fueling up Thursday, Sept. 29, who asked not to …

The good news: It's still summer, and another picture perfect weekend is on tap for the St. Michael-Albertville area. So you're not sure if you can find enough change in those seat cushions to mow the grass, hit the road on your Harley or take the boat for a cruise on your favorite waterway. No worries, St. Michael Patch is here to help. Each week, Patch will compile a list of gas and diesel fuel prices for St. Michael and Albertville stations.
