St. Michael Man Begins Local Loyalty Program

John Tschida has worked with airline and hotel loyalty programs for the last 20 years and decided to launch a local loyalty program.

St. Michael resident John Tschida is no stranger to loyalty programs. He's spent the last 20 years working with various airline and hotel programs. Last November he came up with an idea after seeing a sticker for Shop Saint Michael. "What if I could create a cost effective loyalty program for business owners and also create a benefit for the local community," he said. Tschida, who's lived in St. Michael since 1999 with his family brainstormed how the program might work with different technology being used at local businesses. Because each business has different capabilities with their POS systems or other technology using a barcode as is used for other loyalty programs wouldn't work. "The cost to implement a technology program in all local…

Shop St. Michael Continues to Grow

The Shop St. Michael group continues to grow and invites other local businesses to join this week at their annual meeting.

The Shop Saint Michael group boasts nearly 50 business members and exists for basic yet very important reasons. "Shopping local encourages local prosperity," Shop Saint Michael secretary Wayne Berthiaume and owner of Verizon Wireless St. Michael said. "Dollars spent local, stay local. You go to the local dentist. The dentist uses a local accountant. The accountant uses the local salon. The salon owner shops at the local hardware store. The revolving dollars stay in the community and help each business owner support the other and support the community as a whole," he said. The group, formed in 2010, was the brainchild of Berthiaume. "I was at a meeting that talked about this kind of group and thought someone [in St. Michael] needed to do …

Letter to the Editor: Shopping Locally Spurs Economy in St. Michael

The outgoing chair of the Shop Saint Michael committee shares his message of keeping every dollar possible in town.

You've likely seen the Shop Saint Michael posters around town. The posters list the reasons why we, the Shop Saint Michael committee, feel it’s important for residents to shop locally. I want to elaborate on those reasons so that you, the consumer, understand why it’s important to support area retailers. Shopping locally strengthens the local economy. When the local economy is strong, neighborhoods are strong. There are ample property tax dollars to support schools and activities. Most of us have seen examples of towns in which many of the main street businesses go under because residents shopped elsewhere and the town loses its vitality. We want our business community to flourish so that our towns — our property values — flourish. …

I totally agree and especially try to buy in season foods from local farmers. The environmental impact of reducing fuel usage is another added bonus. However, I know I am not the only citizen disgruntled at the lack of local dining options. We are in need of more options. Their is an abundance of places to get bar food which is not a healthy or always family friendly option. What about soup and …   more ›

St. Michael Receives Results of Citywide Survey

A survey mailed to the more than 5,400 households of St. Michael in April has revealed a well-known void in the community.

A survey conducted by the Shop Saint Michael organization in conjunction with the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce revealed St. Michael consumers have some wants and needs that aren't being met, but are pleased with the overall state of the community.  Of the more than 5,400 surveys mailed out with cooperation from the City of St. Michael  (via water usage bills), the group received more than 335 responses, or a return rate of about 6 percent.  "That's pretty good when it comes to these kinds of things," said Kathleen Poate, president of the I-94 West Chamber. "We were pleased." The survey aimed to gauge the consumer climate in St. Michael. What businesses were succeeding in town? Where were consumers headed for other services?  Gasoline and …

I agree with the safety issue at the one way intersection as well as not being able to see if anyone is coming. I hate being the 1st person going after the light turns green because you can't see at all if anyone is coming thru on the red...Isn't there a way to put up some type of mirror so people know or a blinking light if a vehicle is sensored and not stopping?   more ›

Frugal Families: Five Good Deals Courtesy of Shop Saint Michael

The Shop Saint Michael group, a consortium of businesses around St. Michael, offers these deals close to home for families on the go.

It's Wednesday, and that means its "deal time." Per usual, we're giving residents a write-up on what's good in the St. Michael-Albertville area.  What makes this week's "Frugal Families" column unique, however, is that it's contributed by the Shop Saint Michael group.  Shop Saint Michael is a cooperative group of more than three dozen St. Michael businesses in a variety of different services, working together to promote shopping local.  So, without further ado, here are the group's five best bets for April.  1. JR's Pub and Pizza Good Friday, check out the Friday night fish fry buffet. If you miss it? Relax, JR's said it is  being held over beyond Easter, by popular request. Also, check out the brunch buffet Sunday mornings (including …
