April is Awesome for Kids: St. Michael Schools Will Start Two Hours Late April 19

Eschewing prior policy, the St. Michael-Albertville School District postponed school early Thursday evening.

The St. Michael-Albertville School District has postponed the start of the school day for Friday, April 19 by two hours.  Buses will also run two hours later than their normal stop time.  District officials made the call at about 9 p.m. Thursday night, as snow was still coming down at a steady clip in the St. Michael-Albertville area.  More than 4 inches of snow had fallen by 5 p.m. Thursday and it was still coming, according to unofficial measurements taken by St. Michael Patch. Winds were clocking in at about 20 MPH, making visibility difficult in just semi-rural areas, such as Wright County Road 19 near the Albertville Premium Outlets.  The postponement call came down earlier than what had been operating procedure in the past. District …

It's like they don't really know how to handle snow. C'mon, it's been snowing in MN for about, well, forever. It's not that hard to make a call at 6AM even after messing up the last time. Saying they called a late start the night before instead of in the morning because of the last fiasco is silly. But I have to say, conditions were fine enough to go at the 2 hrs late start and I'm glad we didn't…   more ›

Trivia Time: St. Michael-Albertville Girls Soccer Hosts Second Annual Event

Test your knowledge and earn bragging rights among your friends and peers, all for a good cause, as the St. Michael-Albertville girls' soccer team hosts a new sort of fundraiser.

As school districts tighten their belt, extracurricular activities have often taken it open their collective selves to raise funds to succeed, including money for trips, additional coaching staff members and even equipment. Friday night, the St. Michael-Albertville girls' soccer team is putting a new twist on that idea, looking to raise money with an event that promises an evening of fun, combined with a test of wits. The girls' team will host its second annual "Trivia Night" at the high schoolcafeteria/commons area, with the fun beginning a 7 p.m. and running until about 9 p.m. Spokesperson Charise Schuttz said last year that the now-annual event is a perfect fit for a squad that was the Mississippi 8 Academic Champion in 2011 and is the …

A Record Nine St. Michael-Albertville Wrestlers Place at State Tournament

Jordan Joseph picked up his first state championship as a Knight, while Tommy Thorn won his third straight Class AAA individual title.

Two St. Michael-Albertville wrestlers stuck gold again, two nights after the Knights won a share of their first-ever Class AAA team championship, as the blue and gold continued their medal haul in St. Paul.  Tommy Thorn picked up his third straight state championship with a 9-1 decision over Gannon Volk of Apple Valley, and Jordan Joeseph edege Tartan's T.J. O'Hara, a defending state champion, as 170 pounds to take his first gold.  Three other Knights–Mark Voss, Lincoln Mallinger and Cole Sladek–all made their way to the finals Saturday night. Voss, at 132 pounds, took on defending champion Seth Gross of Apple Valley and was edged 4-3. Sladek found a familiar foe at the end in Mitch Bengston of St. Cloud Apollo, and Bengston captured …

St. Michael-Albertville Wrestlers Tie Apple Valley, Share State Championship

In a match up for the ages, St. Michael-Albertville and Apple Valley wrestled to a draw in the State 3A Team Tournament final.

Mike Kessler had dreamed of this moment. With his team's back against the wall, trailing Apple Valley 28-25, the 285-pound heavyweight for the Knights had the state tournament team title in his hands. A decision over Lord Joshua Hyeamang would mean a 28-all tie, and a share of the state championship. Kessler pulled through, getting a second period escape and scoring a point with his aggressive shots at Hyemang's legs, forcing the big Eagle into a stall, to earn a 2-0 win. It was a fitting end with more than 15,000 fans watching the state's top two "big school" teams tangle. Apple Valley, with its history, was admittedly "the underdog" much of the year. The Eagles, however, were everyone's champion in this theater until someone finally …

St. Michael-Albertville Wrestlers Poised for State Glory

Fans, coaches and players alike will tell you this has been the week circled on the calendar for the past three years. Now, it's time for the Knights to deliver.

Every program in every corner of the state sets out on the course of a new sports season with one goal in mind: win a state championship.  For some, it's a realistic goal. The pieces are in place. The competition can't match up. And, if all goes according to plan, the trophy will be there at the end.  Rarely is that easy.  But for this St. Michael-Albertville wrestling team, which enters today's Class AAA Team Tournament as the No. 1 seed and No. 3 and 5 team in the entire country, that's been the method of thinking all season. Well, almost all season. Related: The Team Tournament begins today at 9 a.m. Semifinal coverage will be brodcast on Prep 45 Online beginning at 1 p.m., and you can listen to Gregg Greeno and the KRWC crew live from …

Knights Girls Basketball Cruises to Win, Raises Thousands on Coaches vs. Cancer Night

The St. Michael-Albertville girls picked up a huge conference win and raised nearly $2,000 for two St. Michael-Albertville families fighting cancer.

Consider Coaches vs. Cancer Night a success on all levels for the 10th-ranked St. Michael-Albertville girls' basketball team.  Coach Kent Hamre's team dominated from start to finish against the Monticello Magic, who are ranked No. 8 in Class 3A, one class lower than the Knights.  Senior Natalie VanWyhe led the Knights with 18 points, six assists, six steals and a handful of rebounds as the STMA girls trailed only once in a 64-51 win.  Mackenzie Bebo added 15 and had three blocks. Erin Autio scored 11 and pulled down rebounds.  But it was a bigger number - nearly $4,000 - that mattered to Hamre and the Knights.  " [We raised] $3956.80 for the Juntunen and Purohit families. [STMA Middle School West students] Aly and Tyler took part in the …
