STMA Girls Lacrosse First Varsity Season Now Set to Start April 23, 2013

The games that were to open the Knights' inaugural season in the week of April 15 have been postponed.

This was to have been the first week of the inaugual regular season for St. Michael-Albertville High School girls lacrosse team since the sport's elevation elevation from club activity to varsity status. But the lingering winter weather had other ideas, so now the team's season begins next week, with a Tuesday matchup with Delano High School at Delano. Several team leaders told the Press & News about how the team's evolution feels on the verge of varsity play: “From not being a school sport, we haven’t had as many girls come out,” [senior co-captain Makenzie] Bebo said. “Now that it is, we have a lot of new people and a lot of new interest in us. It’s just nice to be recognized.” ... “The fact the seniors have come all the way from our …

Slow Start to 2013 for a STMA Baseball Team with Sights Set High

With wintry spring weather, it's been one postponed game after another for the Knights.

The St. Michael-Albertville High School baseball team is ready to take the field and, with any luck, take its place alongside successful squads of the recent past as recounted by the Sun Press & News. That is, if they can ever get a game in. The weather has been unkind when it wasn't being downright hostile, as evidenced by recent team tweets in the Storify window above (or at Storify.com). See the STMA 2013 baseball schedule at the team website. In the Sun Press & News article, head coach Paul Schumm reflected on the 2012 season and what lies ahead: “We are four pitchers deep and [outfielder Tyler] Berg might have been our top player at the end of last year,” Schumm said. “All the teams in our conference have a shot this year. We have a …

Sean Scharlau 3rd from STMA Picked for All-Star Football Game: Press & News

Only past STMA selections were Chris Kleven and Matt Spaeth, the newspaper reported.

For the third time ever, a St. Micheal-Albertville High School football player has been chosen to play in the state all-star high school game, according to the Press & News. Senior Sean Scharlau told the newspaper his selection came as a surprise: Scharlau said he was both surprised and honored when first hearing of the news in mid-February from head coach Jared Essler. “At first I was surprised when Essler told me to fill out the form to be nominated,” said the 6-foot-1, 270-pound Scharlau. “I was pretty honored once I found out I was chosen. There are a lot of bigger and better linemen out there, but it feels good.” Read the full article at pressnews.com. Related:

UPDATE: Knights Knock off Elks in Section Final to Advance to State

After battling toe to toe with Buffalo the last couple of years, St. Michael-Albertville for the Section 8-4A dumped newcomer Elk River in the championship Friday in Collegeville.

UPDATE: St. Michael-Albertville is headed back to the Target Center for the second straight year after knocking off Elk River by nine points, 68-59, in the Section 8-4A final. Erin Autio led the Knights back from a nine-point deficit in the first half, and the STMA backcourt paced the No. 1 seed in Section 8 in the second half, holding Elk River at bay most of the final stages.  The Elks would cut the Knights' lead-which grew as big as nine-to five in the final two minutes. But free-throw shooting and execution was key, as the STMA held off any late Elk River charge.  • • • •  For the fifth time in five years, the St. Michael-Albertville Knights girls' basketball team will lace it up for a chance to head to Target Center and the State 4A …

Rebuilt Knights Ready to Take Next Step in Buffalo Tonight

Despite losing most of its starting five entering the 2012-2013 season, the St. Michael-Albertville boys' basketball team repeated as conference champs. Now, it looks to take the next step.

When head coach Tim Anfenson looked ahead to the 2012-2013 season as last year's basketball campaign wound down, he made a prophetic statement. "We're losing a lot," he told Patch. "But it's not exactly like the cupboard will be bare." Even Anfenson, though, couldn't have imagined this. With five straight wins to end the regular season, including a win over then conference leader Buffalo, the Knights won a second straight Mississppi 8 Conference championship. They did it despite losing four of its five starters from the 2012 season, and the bulk of its scoring. Michael Mooney, Michael Wiese and Max Babb had led the Knights to 20 wins in 2012. This year, new faces would have to pick up the slack. Well, at least scantly familiar faces. Cole …

Readers React: STMA Student Body, Parents Discuss School Lunch Issue

St. Michael Patch readers shared opinions about recent school lunch problems, which were discussed during Monday's school board meeting.

After St. Michael Patch published an article about school lunch issues, readers took to the comment stream to express their opinions with the perceived food quality problem that St. Michael-Albertville School District is facing. Read: School Lunches at Center of St. Michael-Albertville School Board Discussion One reader, who was identified as “student STMA,” said that while nutritional requirements come from the government, the district is forgetting that students aren’t eating the food. I love fruit, but quality fruit. It's hard to find a banana that is ripe, and apples that aren't bruised. It may be government required to supply this food, I understand that, but the food supplied isn't prepared the best. Senior at STMA agreed that the …

Rick, good points, all! It may seem that we've strayed far from the topic at hand, but it's all due to a slippery slope we've been on for decades. That has brought us to the point where federal offices in Washington DC are dictating what schools can put on kids lunch trays.   more ›
