A Record Nine St. Michael-Albertville Wrestlers Place at State Tournament

Jordan Joseph picked up his first state championship as a Knight, while Tommy Thorn won his third straight Class AAA individual title.

Two St. Michael-Albertville wrestlers stuck gold again, two nights after the Knights won a share of their first-ever Class AAA team championship, as the blue and gold continued their medal haul in St. Paul.  Tommy Thorn picked up his third straight state championship with a 9-1 decision over Gannon Volk of Apple Valley, and Jordan Joeseph edege Tartan's T.J. O'Hara, a defending state champion, as 170 pounds to take his first gold.  Three other Knights–Mark Voss, Lincoln Mallinger and Cole Sladek–all made their way to the finals Saturday night. Voss, at 132 pounds, took on defending champion Seth Gross of Apple Valley and was edged 4-3. Sladek found a familiar foe at the end in Mitch Bengston of St. Cloud Apollo, and Bengston captured …

St. Michael-Albertville Wrestlers Poised for State Glory

Fans, coaches and players alike will tell you this has been the week circled on the calendar for the past three years. Now, it's time for the Knights to deliver.

Every program in every corner of the state sets out on the course of a new sports season with one goal in mind: win a state championship.  For some, it's a realistic goal. The pieces are in place. The competition can't match up. And, if all goes according to plan, the trophy will be there at the end.  Rarely is that easy.  But for this St. Michael-Albertville wrestling team, which enters today's Class AAA Team Tournament as the No. 1 seed and No. 3 and 5 team in the entire country, that's been the method of thinking all season. Well, almost all season. Related: The Team Tournament begins today at 9 a.m. Semifinal coverage will be brodcast on Prep 45 Online beginning at 1 p.m., and you can listen to Gregg Greeno and the KRWC crew live from …

St. Michael Wrestlers Begin March to State Tournament Tonight

The No. 1 team in Minnesota and No. 3 team in the United States squares off with Elk River at 4 p.m. to begin its postseason quest for the State. 3A championship.

It's a difficult task for any team to march through a Section Wrestling tournament, both as a team and with a group of individuals, and come out on top.  But for the St. Michael-Albertville Knights, anything less than a Section 7-3A team championship, held this weekend in Forest Lake, would be utter disappointment.  And they don't mind the pressure.  The Knights, who are the reigning champions in the section since they joined Class 3A, are heavy favorites to not only win the section, but to win the Minnesota Class 3A title, something the school hasn't done before. As a team, standing in the way will be Cambridge-Isanti, the No. 4 team in the state and last year's Section 7-3A runner-up. The Knights, however, dominated the BlueJackets in …

Two of Nation’s Top-Ranked Wrestling Teams Battle in St. Michael Friday

Simley and St. Michael-Albertville, ranked nationally at No 9 and No. 5, respectively by a leading wrestling publication, will do battle at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

It’s a bit early, but this just might be Minnesota wrestling’s battle to see who is “best in the state.” The winner of tonight’s duel between St. Michael-Albertville and Simley High (of Inver Grove) will certainly have some rights to that title when they walk away from the mats tonight. The Knights are ranked No. 5 in the country by Intermat magazine, with Simley ranked ninth. Amateur Wrestling has STMA ninth, with Spartans right behind in 10th place. Either way, it’s going to be a huge battle at 7 p.m. at the STMA gym. “This may be the most high profile home dual meet in STMA history,” said head coach Dan Lefebvre. “They bring a very talented group.” According to Lefebvre, Simley is led by their four senior state champions: 2012 state …

I just read some comments on The Guillotine that STMA had some transfers so that's where I got that from. I notice you said "our" are you a member of the team? Remember, Patch promises to report objectively! LOL, just giving you a hard time. I am just a sports fan who saw the article on Intermat and thought I'd share. Either way two good teams going at it and will be fun.   more ›

Success of St. Michael-Albertville's Thorn Family Drawing Statewide Recognition

State tournament appearances are nothing new for the Thorn family, who had Christine and Tommy on the winter sports season's biggest stage this year alone.

It seems the state of Minnesota is learning something the St. Michael-Albertville area knew all along. That Thorn family is pretty special. Christine Thorn, who led the St. Michael-Albertville girls' basketball team to the State 4A Tournament this past week, was the center of attention for the Knights, as Twin Cities media wanted to know: What makes the Thorns so good? Christine, of course, proceeded to lead all scorers in the Knights' loss to Eastview. The bulk of the Thorns' success has come on the wrestling mat. There, Michael won three state championships as an individual, and three with the Knights team. David took four individual titles (one of less than 20 wrestlers in history to do that at the time) and won three championships with…

PHOTOS: Thorn Rises, Briggs Surprises for St. Michael-Albertville Wrestlers

After claiming second as a team in Class 3A, the Knights put seven wrestlers on the medal stand, including state champion Tommy Thorn at 113 pounds.

In a year that provided vastly different paths for two young men on the same team, both Ricky Briggs and Tommy Thorn found themselves under the spotlight on Saturday night, center stage at high school wrestling's biggest event. St. Michael-Albertville sophomore Tommy Thorn has been "Mr. Automatic" for the Knights in 2012, winning night in night out to the tune of a 44-1 record. His only slip was a narrow decision more than three months ago. Thorn rolled his way into the State 3A Individual semifinals Friday, rolling to a pair of pins. In the semis, he gave up his first point of the tournament, letting Hastings' Luke Rowh free on an escape. He would win in a shutout on Saturday, dominating Prior Lake's Tanner Johnshoy in the final for a 5-0…

LISTEN LIVE: St. Michael-Albertville Aims for Team Wrestling Title

The Knights, seeded third, will have to knock off Champlin Park, Hastings and Apple Valley if the tournament goes to form.

St. Michael-Albertville wrestling will shoot for its first-ever Class AAA team championship today as it hits the mat at the Xcel Energy Center. Action started with the state quarterfinal at 9 a.m. versus Champlin Park. Should they win, No. 3 STMA would square off with either No. 2 Hastings or a strong Little Falls High School club that took the Section 8 championship. STMA earned its third straight trip to state with the Section 7-3A title, earned back on Feb. 17 at the high school. "We're very proud of this particular team, just because it's so young," said coach Dan Lefebvre. "To only have one senior, you kind of miss that leadership factor. Nick [Edling] does a great job, but to have just one voice is different. So this team has really …

Nine St. Michael-Albertville Wrestlers Advance to State Tournament

The Knights put four wrestlers on top of the podium and five others qualified for the State 3A tournament this week at the Xcel Energy Center Saturday at the Section 7-3A individuals.

Tommy Thorn has a second straight state championship dead in his sites, and eight other St. Michael-Albertville wrestlers are headed to the Xcel Energy Center Thursday with the same goal. The Knights, who qualified Friday, Feb. 17 for the team tournament, will have nine wrestlers in the State Class 3A individual tournament, including the defending state champion Thorn, now at 113 pounds, who spent all of two minutes on the mat Saturday. Thorn, who had a quarterfinal bye, defeated Monty Fredrickson in 92 seconds in the semifinals, and then needed all of 30 seconds to pin James Pleski of Forest Lake in order to advance to the state tournament. He will be the No. 1 seed at 113 pounds, and carries a record of 40-1. Also rolling to a section …

St. Michael-Albertville Wrestlers Roll into Home Duals

Buffalo, Hutchinson and Zimmerman roll into St. Michael-Albertville High School for a Friday night quadrangular. Saturday, the Knights welcome Prior Lake and Foley for the final regular season homestand.

The St. Michael-Albertville High School werestling team will close out the 2012 home schedule (regular season) this weekend with a flury of action, beginning tonight at 5 p.m. at the gym. The Knights welcome Buffalo, Zimmerman and Hutchinson to St. Michael tonight, then tangle with Prior Lake and Foley Saturday before hitting the road next weekend to close out the regular season in Big Lake and SImley. They'll return home for the Section 7-3A team tournament, which is set for Feb. 17. "Our fan support has been awesome this year," said head coach Dan Lefebvre in his weekly wrestling update, sent to fans and alumni. "I promise you, the wrestlers and coaches really appreciate it." The Knights, ranked No. 2 in Class AAA, secured the Section 7-…

St. Michael-Albertville Wrestling Primed for Stretch Run

After spending the latter part of 2011 learning about themselves, the Knights are ready to live up to their second-ranked billing.

A few things became clear to the St. Michael-Albertville Knights wrestling team through the holiday break. First, Scott West is going to be a terror in the Class 2A tournament. Second, being resilient–as the Knights were at The Clash back on New Years Eve can have its rewards. St. Michael-Albertville finished out of the Top 10 at The Clash Duals, held down in Rochester, but made some headway as a team after dropping two close losses in the opening rounds. A loss in the opening round of the Forest Lake Tournament was also a roadblock, but STMA rebounded to win three in a row, despite a loss in a head-to-head matchup with the tournament host, and walked out an overall champion. Now, the Knights focus on head-to-head action with Class AAA Elk…
