A Veterans Day event to honor and remember veterans took place Sunday.
After his tour as a marine during the Vietnam War, Chris Sauro went to a dumpster and threw away his military uniform. The author of "Twins Platoon: An Epic Story of Young Marines at War in Vietnam," shared the reason he did this with the St. Michael community Sunday evening at a Veterans Day celebration. "I did it because I did not feel my military service was appreciated," he said. Before Vietnam, he and other marines were encouraged to wear their uniforms off base. Afterward, they were encouraged not to, and were told to grow their hair out longer "so we wouldn’t stand out," Sauro said. Guest speakers, a presentation by the color guard and a performance by the St. Michael choir are scheduled.
An event to honor St. Michael veterans and show the community that veterans are still here to help is set for Sunday. The program is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the St. Michael-Albertville Middle School West auditorium. Organized by the St. Michael legion, the American Legion Post 567, the event is open to the public. "It’s a way to honor and thank the veterans for what they’ve done and it’s a way for us to be out there to say we’re here for you for the community," said Eric Kloss, American Legion Post 567 commander. "That is what the basis of our organization is — that we’re here for our community." The color guard will present the colors of the American flag, and the local boy scouts will kick off the event with the Pledge of …

"Today we honor a people who believed in what they fought for," said Lt. Col. Jay DesCamps. "Who believed in a set of ideas. Today, we don't celebrate victory. We celebrate those who made victory possible." DesCamps, a member of the Unite States Army who joined the service on the downward slope of the Cold War in 1981, said his career became much different after the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists 10 years ago. "Everything changed, as people challenged our freedom in a way we'd never seen," the keynote speaker at Friday's Veterans Day ceremonies here at St. Michael-Albertville High School stated. DesCamps was stationed in Anwar Province, Iraq, for a full 12 months in 2006, during the so-called "surge" in troops during the …
