Wright County motorists and passengers are reminded to buckle up this spring as extra Click It or Ticket seat belt patrols take to the roads statewide May 20 - June 2. The Wright County Sheriff's Office is among nearly 400 Minnesota agencies increasing patrols to encourage motorists to buckle up. In the last three years on Minnesota roads (2010-2012), there were 864 traffic deaths, of which 352 (41 percent) were not buckled up. Of those 352 killed, 41 percent were motorists ages 16-29, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety. Statistics show that teens and young adults continue to represent a large percentage of unbelted traffic deaths, …

An arrest means the person has been taken into custody and, in most cases, charged with the crime listed. Along with traffic incidents, the St. Michael area saw several arrests for assault, theft and stalking.
Wright County saw an unusually high number of traffic tickets in the past week. Miscellaneous traffic violations resulted in 71 tickets cited by the Wright County Sheriff's Office. In addition, there were 34 property damage accidents, two personal injury accidents, four hit and run accidents and 12 car-deer accidents in Wright County in the past week. There were three arrests for DWI, no underage consumption arrests, and one school bus stop arm violation in the past week. Arrests in the St. Michael area ranged from assault to theft and stalking. Sheriff Joe Hagerty said missing information in criminal and mental health databases poses a risk in preventing people who would abuse guns from obtaining them.

An Otsego man was arrested last week after he recklessly shot a gun at home and assaulted his fiance when she tried to wrestle the gun away. Andrew Vincent Merhar, 29, allegedly told the woman that he "would not go down easily and would initiate a suicide by cop situation," according to a criminal complaint filed by the Wright County Attorney's Office. He was arrested Jan. 29. When Wright County deputies arrived, the victim was hiding in an upstairs bedroom with her two children, ages three and seven. She told police she heard a gunshot and went downstairs to get the gun away from Merhar. Merhar allegedly punched and choked her, but she was able to get the gun away.
