Emmer Ad May Have Broken Campaign Laws
The 6th Congressional District candidate appeared in a video testimonial for Integrity Exteriors and Remodelers.
Tom Emmer may have run afoul of election laws when the 6th Congressional District candidate appeared in a video endorsing Elk River-based Integrity Exteriors and Remodelers, the Star Tribune reported Monday.
Albertville state Rep. David FitzSimmons (R-District 30B) issued a statement on behalf of the Emmer campaign in which he said the firm had asked for a testimonial after renovating the Emmer for Congress campaign office. Emmer was happy to do it but didn’t intend for the ad to be broadcast or as a campaign advertisement, according to the statement.
However, Paul Ryan, senior counsel for the Campaign Legal Center, told the Star Tribune that a paid advertisement on TV would be breaking the law—even if Emmer didn’t intend for it to air—because it would be an illegal, corporate in-kind contribution.
